LOWER HUTT COUNCIL
A meeting of the Lower Hutt Binbug') Council was held on Mond i y evening. Present: May.;i (Sir Ale^ Rubeits), Cis. J. Mitchell, F. Camp by. i, D. S. Patrick, W. G. Meldi-urn,,.!, K. Boyd. . Apologies were received fvonj , v'rs llobbs, Grierson and Carve)-. The Petone Borough Council wrote stating that it has decided to request the Water Supply."Board.to...carry out its undertaking to procure legislation to re-, lease the Borough of Petone from the scheme, .but that before communicating with the Board this Council is to be invited, if it so desires, to depute a committee, to confer with the Special Committee of the Petone Borough Council upon the matter. The Mayor'statedi that.he did not favour withdrawing^ from the Board. It cost the Council last yeai-^167. If they withdrew now it would be .difficult to get ■in again. "\ •" ';'; vfr" '■*"•■ <r^ In answer tp Cr. Patrick the Mayor stated that the annual payments would likely run into £300 or £400 a year 'for. twenty years. , ■''■~
Ci\ Patrick said the Council should consider the question carefully before committing the Council to such an outlay. lie thought they should confer with Petone and hear their views.
A committee consisting of the Mayor Ci. Patrick and Dr. Bdydi was appointed to confer with the Petone Borough Council, i •■-•■'. . •■'■'■
The New Zealand Government Railways wrote asking when the promised contribution of £200 towards the overhead bridge at Moera may be expected. The cost of the bridge was £1572.
Cr. Patrick'moved that the matter be considered after the , Estimates have been decided on.
Cr. Mitchell seconded.—Carried!
The Engineer reported that the building permits for the month were 47, totalling £25,816 10s. The corresponding month last year £45,874. During the month 189 inspections of works in progress were -carried'" out, 77 house drainage systems ancl four plumbing alterations inspected and passedl.
The Librarian reported that for: the iinouth of May 2,102 books -were JtaTcen put, 30 new books added, 20 new subscribers, 10 members .withdrew. total number of subscribers 320.
*Cr Campbell reported that he had attended the Town' Planning Conference held in Wellington and listen-edi to ;an address by. Mr Mawson. ; No one could take any exception to his remarks but it was questionable whether they were praetiea^ble. V ; . : , • .
Cr.-Campbell,, moved that, the engineer report on tjiei electric lighting of theborough. He felt sure that one of the street lamps near, the bowsers could be sliifted to other; parts. , .:; . . - .
Gr. Mitchell seconded.—^Carried.
Cr. Campbell said that the Council should review; the charge made for the recreation ground; "At present they only got about £130 a year for cricket, hockey, soccer and rugby. The Wellington Rugby Union got the benefit of the gates not the local club. They would have to improve the accommodation on the recreation ground, ;but he /thought the rents should, be considerably increased, so as to enable the Council to do .the work.
. Cr. Patrick said the Council should get a percentage ojf' the gates. If they spent £10QO bn; a grandstanai they should get more revenue by way of ground rent. It was decided to review the position
at a later date.
The Engineer estimated that it would take,£2(so to repair the cycle track in Railway Avenue' from the bridge to the station.—Referred to the Works' Committee. ' ' "!' ■'..■■■' -•■■;■:.''■ ■-•■ •• :•■
■ After a discussion, on the Petone ramp it was- decided that the -Council take no a~ction ; in!the matter. What was wanted was better warning facilities and a little patience by th.2 motorists. :
