HUTT (27) v. BERHAMPORE (0)
The . above game, attracted about twelve hundred spectators. Naturally a great deal of interest centred upon the initial appearance of A. E. Cooke. Adfthough nursing a tender knee, Cooke gave glimpses of the form which, has made him famous throughout the -country. Filling the role .of second fiv:eeigikthj he usuaHy drew; a couple of the opposing Ibaieks before- sehdinig:the ball out. with the result that the wings received reasonable opportunities of scoring which they were always ready to turn to good account. Six tries were scored, Ball (3), Russell (2), and Pomaxe (1) beinig the scorers. As these players comprise the three-quarter line it is evident that they were well served. The local side had to depend on line out work and loose play for the b&&, as the Berhaanpore hookers gained tihe majority of scrums. The Hutt serum was upset through, the absence of Roberts, the lock. Todd, who filled; the vacancy, worked hard as a-forward tburt was scarcely a success as lock, a position which is not easily filled. During the first half Berhampore hel'd their opponents fairly well, changing over with only six points aigainst them. In the second spell the reds saw enough of tfie ball to put the issue beyond doubt, the backs topping off some capital naovements. Four out of the six tries .were fine offorte. v The first try by Russell was the result' of a nice blind jyde movement by McKay, who handed to Feeney, who drawing ihis man, sent a good pass to Russell, the winger clapping on pace to scoro after Tuniiiiiig about thirty yards. Ball's first try was a brffliaritone, the winger coming inside "hi** centre to take a short pass and shoot straight through under itihe goal posts. The second score by tikis player was the result of sheer pace and determination. Although bowled over twice, Ball managed to regain his feet and streak through from the quarter mark to notch a fine try. Probably like best back movement of tihe day Vjolminated in Bussed!'s second try. Hutt were attacking in the south comer when Wojod' threw a pass infield;, the leather passing through, about seven bands, before the hefty winger barged ■Mirouigh. in the opposite corner. Tie remaining tries by Ball and Pomaxe resulted from passing movements which ■caughit the defenders out of position. In tfc.e Hutt fonwards. Peck played an outstanding gaonej and it was in a great measure due to ihis sterling play that the local side was able to notch, such a substantial victory. The big fellow fed his backs repeatedly from the
line out and also lead several rushes, having the hardest of luck in not scoring two tries after dribbJinig the ball right through to the goal line. Another forward prominent in line out work was Skilton, who also ■ did we'll in the- loose play. H. and R. Hinton were to the fore in the loose rushes and in opening up the play. Dowsctt, Todd, Stopf orth and Wood ma.de up the balance of a hard working pack. The backs worked well together being good on. defence or attack. It was pleasijig to see the wings: receive so many opportunities. Cooke, although obviously not taking too many risks;,' was responsible for some neat openings. With this player fit and well the local rearguard ■will improve on their display in- this gaoue. Poniare was responsible for some fine line" kickingj as also was Cooke who brought off some beautiful left footers. Jarman was safe, making sure of the dine every time. McKay and Feeney were haanpered by the quick breaking up of the opposing forwards, but nevertheless got throiig-h a lot of useful work.. , _ v LOWER GRADE RESULTS: Junior.A defeated Marist 17—3. Sundgren appears to be getting used to the half back job and must eventually make good in this position. The junior backs brought off some good movements. Ross playing as an inside" back, shows much promise. Bradley was j>rominent in the forwards. Thirds .lost to St. Patrick A G —3. Fourths lost to ScLwyn 14 —9. Fifths lost to Miraonar 12—5. Harris and Haig are two good backs in this team, which has vacancies for a few more players. The Sixths suffered their first defeat at the hands of Wellington 9—o. The backs in this team do not appear' to have any idea of keeping- their positions. It is only fair to state that two of the best backs were absent from the side. ' NOTES.
