RED CROSS ACTIVITIES CLOTHING RELIEF.

, -For some time past it. has been, recognised t!hat a branch of tthis work was required in 'the Hutt district, numerous enquiries for help'in the~way of clothing coining from Lower Htftt, Petone, Moera, Normandale, -Mangaroa and Silverstreani.; Many more people need help than were able to; apply at the Dixon Street rooms, as the fare t WelTington is the price of the family's meal. Througjh the kindness of the Mayor (Sir Alexander Roberts), in granting the free use of rooms in Feist's Buildings, over the l' Hutt News'' offices, the hon. secretary, Mrs. F. E. Joyce, has been able to organise a branch for Hutt and Pc-tone residents, and those from districts mentioned above, and will open the rooms for distribution of clothing on Thursday 29tfi May, an-d every Thursday until further notice, from 1.30 till 3.30 p.m.

The persons to whom this help in the way of necessary clot&es and boots will apply, are those who through unemployment, sieknesis, low *wage or any other of the various causes of money difficulties are yin need of wearing apparel, and have not <t&e means to buy it. It should be understood by -applicants that the source from which t!he clothing comes, is by gift from those who are in sympathy witih. the movement to make things a little easier for the distressed. These people send us clothing Which they do not intend to wear again and so long as_ the supply is kept up, the Ladies' Auxiliary share it out as fairly as possible amongst those 'genuinely in need. We are indeed grateful to those people of Lower Hutt and Wellington who recently sent us clothing, particularly underclothing, in' such splendid condition, no '' white elephants," or food for tho destructor from them, but dpcent comfort for some needy soul these cold days and nights We never seem to keep pace with the need for men's clothes,. shirts, socks and boots, certainly a parcel' of boy's clothes is the rarest find, as a matter of fact I do not remember any but stray articles of 'boysVclot!he&, pne.won, dera if every n-iotter's son, is the s&ine, and wears it all right torags before he can possibly grow out of it. Thelot; of .fee single ip ;iu is often pathetic, he has to stand down for the. family ..many but yet has to live, and. his chances of work are none the better if he hag^no soles to his shoes. Unforfapj^^^a man out of work ; and. no,t Savllß a home, soon io.»ks like he feel's. T^ often get asked for a tie or soflWkliar, and permission to put it on theft and "then, as a 30I? of work is proJfised. Solel^ss baots are left behind^mtimes, in the pjc^urable excitement oflfeeling sometMjA solid beneath !his'■'■ffeet. XTnfor-

tunatc'ly we often get a "gift"? o£ li/ots, which have been worn to the last of thoir use, unmendable and unwearrttlt^ often alomg with moth-eaten dress suits and coats of pre-war style, heavily 7 braided and very much shaped, useless to cut down, and anyone wearing same would be considered '' queer if she had jnoney-, and ''mental" if she had none.

Lady Eoberts' is interested in the .movement and has consented to be Pre-

siclcKt. Mrs Joyce, secretary, and: Mes•dames Ho'ggar'r!, Masseyy Foote, Scoou, W-:bb and others committee members.

I'areels may be left at the rooms over ' 'Hutt News'' or will''be called for on receipt of a card or telephone 749 Lower Hiitt.
