At the Recreation ground last Saturday Senior B team met Brooklyn and wou by the odd goal in nine. The game was a1 vast improvement on any seen on the local ground this season/ the team playing with more understanding and keeping their positions much better, but yet if they intend to win next Saturday when they play on the Basin Reserve against the Thistles^ the leading team, they will still have to improve. The .two full backs will have to cover up each other, if one moves' up the other needs to drop back, the two wing halves are inclined to wander, quite often they were to be seen on the opposite side to where they should be, quite a few goals have been lost because of this fault.
The teams were as follows:—
Brooklyn: Archer; Hendry and Sut■tori; Hughes, Hanson, TJpchurch; Mitldieton,. Brown, Anton, W.Hughes and •Tones. Hutt: Webster; Chapman and Gardiner; Lands, MeDougall, and, Me-Sloy; Stobfts, .Tossqp, Brown, Crun dwell and Batciielor. .... After the kick-off play was very even, the ball travelling up and down the; field, from one of these raids the Hutt secured first blood/ when Batchelor sent across a fast high; shot which Archer pulled down but was /unable to hold, -Stobbs who was" close at hand rushed the ball through./ This gave the home team some encouragement and it was hot long..until they were back and knocking at Brooklyn 's goal, but /when it did come 'and Stobbs again, put through the referee-ruled it off side. Hutt kept the pressure /iip and Brown and Jessop both came near to scoring but Archer was right in/ form and brought off some good saves. Then it -was Brooklyn >s turn at attacking and they forced two corners in quick sue; cession, these were cleared, but. Middloton, the right winger for .'.Brooklyn,; sent overa good shot and Webster was there', but he could not hold the ball and Brown or Anton rushed: the ball through, thus making the scores even. Brooklyn then forced, matters and another corner was- awarded to them. Middleton received and," with no oppositiqn sent in a: good, shot which Webster never saw; thus putting Brooklyn in . the lead. /After »the/kiek-o^ff Hutt tried hard to- equalise, McDoug'all making a great shot and Archer t making a real good save," and giving away a corner. From this kick, Brooklyn carried play to; the bthe'r eind arid Middleton scored Brooklyn/third goal, with a good low shotw Half-time sounded soon after.- ! ■ '.' '■. With./ the wind behind them, Hutt soon asscii;ed tlieuiselyes.. . MeDougall, who gained possession, pushed the ball out to Stobbs, who scored with a good shot. Keeping up-the pressure Batcholor secured a corner and placing the ball well,-nearlyall the forwards, made good attempts,;but'the goalie brought off some good saves, but finally Crundwell netted the ball. Keeping up the •.pressure'.Jessop'V secured and .scored the "best goal of the day, thus giving the honie team the lead. Brown added the
fifth goal, giving the home team and th6ir supporters confidence, but Brooklyn Tallied and carried play down the left wing and through Hutt 's half boing out of position he was able to draw the centre half,, and gave^Ajiton his chance to scoie, the game thus ending s^-4:'7. .". ■..'■•?■ ' ■ ' '.■■"- . v For fhe yisitbrs,; Archer ,in goal was the best and n^ostconsistent player, lie brought offi spine great saves. Heridry was the best Jof the two backs and Hanson the pick of the halves; this player plays a cool game and parts -with the ball to advantage, his pas£es ; to Anton at centre were good and only; for MteDougall keeping close, to Ipn, ne would have had niore than one goal to his credit. Middleton was g00d,,, but he was not close enough watehedj he could shoot all right. Anton is still a good and dangerous forward.
IFbr the home teairi, Webster's display was all wrong, and it is to be hoped that next Saturday h^'-rill show that he is still a good goalio. . Chapman and Gardiner are a good paii* of full backs, a lilftle talk together and perhaps they would understand each
other better, about covering up, etc. The halves are good workers, but Lands who has the ability, wander.s from his place too niuch, he wants to size up which- is the better player of his opponents, the outside or inside man and pay more attdntion to the best one of the two. Stobbs, another new comer at 6'iitside rignt, lost several good chances through keeping too clqso in to the centre, it is much, easier to run in and meet a ball, than turn and' run out, that.'s the position, although he improved a lot in the second spell. Jessdp is a .great little player, his goal was a beauty, but be careful after you
beat two of your opponents, it is time to part with the ball. Brown at centre is a big improvement this year, he is a bustler and keen. Crundwellis keep-' ing his form well, but he'was a bit off colour last Saturday. Batchelor at out-: side left was good, it was his best game this season, his centreing of the ball from the line was nice to see.
The Fourth grade local. team played Marist; also; on the HJutt Rec, and after a good fast game, although only playnig with ten men, the local boys maintained their unbeaten record, defeating Marist by the, odd goal in five. For the home -team -the scorers were O'Leary, Ridyard and O'Neil."
