LOWER HUTT COUNCIL

A meeting of the Lower Hutt Bor j cugh Council was held on-Monday1 evening. Present: the Mayor (Sir. Al9x. Roberts) Cr,s. A. J. Hobbs, J. Mitchel!. F. Campbell, D. S. Patrick, W. G. Mel•drum, A. Grierson, J. R. Boyd.

The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote asking the Council to appoint a repre-

sentative to attend a public enquiry on the 4th«prox for the purpose of hearing evidence to determine the boundaries of the region, comprising the City of Wellington and surrounding districts. -

Or. Mitchell moved' and Gr. Hobbs seconded that the Mayor act as the Council's representative.—Carried.

The Mayor stated that there is a proposal that the regional area should include the whole of the Valley in the City boundary. Personally he \thouglit that the Hutt Valley shouldi be a region of its own. He would ask- the Council to debate the question at the next meeting.

The manager of the 2STew Zealand Railways wrote asking when the cheque for £200,. promised-by the Council as a contribution towards the cost of the overhead bridge ; between Awamutu Street and Randwick Road, will be available.

The w Mayor stated; that no-amount was promised, but.he thought that the Council were in duty bouno; to-contribute.

Cr. 'Patrick said that when the matter was before the Council before he opposed, it oiVthe grounds that it only benefited people who were living in that vicinity. It was purely a Government job and they should earry~ the ' ' baby.' 'The bridge was for the benefit of the children of the Government area. The Government had done well out .of the sale of the land. . ■•'.;■-

Cr. Campbell nioved that the Mayor look into the matter ami ascertain if --£200 isi a fair proportion Of the'cost. He entirely disagreed withCr/ Patrick's remarks. -." .

Cr. Mitchell seconded and said that the way the Government had assisted the borough there should be. no hesitation in passing the amount. The motion waa put and carried. The Librarian reported that for the month of April 11£| bopks had been taken out, 35 new books added, 11 new subscribers, 3 members withdrew, total number of subscribers 310.

The Borough Ranger reported that for the month 15 head of stock *ad been Sold in pound, one horse, 11/-, one cow^fi -15s. .•"".:...' " It was resolved, that all accounts outstanding for rates if not paid before 31st May would be sued. for.
