ST. JAMES'S ANNUAL PARISH MEETING.
The annual meeting of parisioners was held in St. James's Hall on Wednesday 30th April. Tho vicar, Yen. Archdeacon -Hansell, presided over a good attendance and in his'opening remarks said that he sensed considerablymore spiritWl activity in tihe parish than could be contained in the churchwardens' report. In support of tMs he spoke of the increased activity among the parishioners of Waiwhetu, Epuni, Belmont and Taita. At all of these cen-tres the number of commjunicartts had increased in common with those of St. James's. Tike number of candidates prepared for Confirmation had been 76. On the social side, each of these dis-r triete had shown increased activity. The vicar acknowledged the good work that was being done by tie lady workers, and by*the choir, also by the Mo-' thers' Union and tlie Girls' Club. The C.E.M.S which.; languished for several years was now very much alive. He was deeply grateful to those who conducted the S.unday Schools, the Bible Classes and the Boys' Club, simply out of love for t»he young -people. The Tennis Club he regarded as one of the church's most live social activities. He considered tha-t no parish-was more fortunate than St. James's in its lay-read-ers, wiho we lie a.tremendous help to t»h.c clergy. ;
The annual report and balance sheet were adopted.
. Several speakers stressed the necessity for more, genera.! support of the freewill offertory system which actually >showed a failing off in receipts'. Particular mention was made of the work done last winter by a munber of ladies who raised sufficient money to re-carpet the chancel. ■: > ' .
Mt v S. M. Hobbs congratulated the church wardens on the excellent report
which oie consitlorod was the^best he hud seen in the parish and said that it made it possible for one to see whn', 'a-great amount of work was being done by others. Referring to Mr. Tunley's regrets that t-he parish could not afford a motor ear for the clergy, Mr Hobbs said,-" This paTish can afford anything; it is only a question of getting hold of people." WAIWHETU.
The annual meeting of the Waiwhetu Anglican Church Hall- Committee was held at St. Paul's on Thursday evening last- Arehdeaeon Hansell presided over ■a representative gathering of ioners. The chairman congratulated the district on the splendid -work carried out during the year and commended ■the committee for " the suggestion to build a class room which might be used, as a vesitry. Voluntary labour had been offered and it was estimated that the work could be carried out in the near future at a. minimum of cost. The vaear pointed out that St. Paul's was a dedicated building and should only be used for religious purpo&es and for socials connected with the church. He said that St. James V Vestry had considered the matter, very fuMy and had laid this down as the policy to be followed, j Mr. C. Pegler, chairman of the school committee, said that whilst he much regretted/ tfhat -his committee woulid not be able to use the room for future school socials, he thought the decision was a reasonable one and he wished to fhank the Vestry for past favours and for the consideration at all times. The following committee was elect-ed:—-Mr. E. T. Thompson (chairman), Messrs Thessnmn,' Ashton, Douthett, CJaTter, Fairbrother, Collins., M-esdames Bayliss and Massey.
Light refreshments were dispensed by the laidies.
