MAN'S EXTRAORDINARY

CONDUCT

"I regaVd this as an exceptionally bad case of assault and I must treat it as such," said Mr T. B. McNeil, S.M., in the Petone Magistrate's Court when sentencing William Arthur Vivian, aged 24, to six months' imprisonment. Vivian had pleaded guilty to assaulting a man at Petone.

Detective-Sergeant Holmes said that the circumstances in the case were rather serious. A lady was standing on the street' in Kensington Avenue when the accused drove up in his motor lorry ,and, getting out of it, grabbed the girl and punched and hit her about the face anti body. He then knocked her into the gutter. The girl attempted to scream, but the accused placed his hand over her mouth and prevented her from doing so. Eventually she got free and screamed, and the accused then made off. * 'He has given no explanation and' it seems to be an aggravated assault with no possible provocation,'' concluded Mr Holmes.

In reply to the Magistrate, DetectiveSergeant Holmes said that the girl had not been out of bed since the assault. The accused had. no previous criminal history.
