RUGBY.
PETONE 17, HUTT 8.
An enjoyable holiday game was played on the Recreation Ground on Easter Monday between the above teams. The blues fielded quite a respectable side, which inclivded six senior players. The experience of such well known players as Coman, Byrne, Coulston and Walker, was a little too muck for many of the youthful Hutt backs, but.nevertheless some promising colts were noted, who will be heard of higher up before long. The • local side included three members, of the senior team, in Monigatti, Feeney and Todd and also had the assistance of Ned Barry (Marist) who incidentally was the outstanding forward on the paddock. Some of the young forwards wiho took part stood up well to the hard going and as many of them have just come out of the age limit grades, their form was particularly pleasing. Williams and Hansen were tWo backs who caught the eye, ;both being nippy on attack and good on defence. Todd impressed as a player likely to do well for himself w»hen he gains a little more experience. At present he is inclined to get out of position too-much. Feeney played a very sound game, being the outstanding back on the local side.
NOTES.
Concerning the grade entries as published in last week's issue, we foeg to inform members that the entry for the Intermediate team has been cancelled and a junior B team substituted in lieu thereof. A further scrutiny of players disclosed the fact that the club has at its disposal thirty-five players 6f Junior status; after making allowance for a few doubtful ones. Two good coaches are available for these teams in Messrs S. Wilson and F. Cooper, and they will have the following material to select from:—Backs: Rix-Trot, Hansen, Killeen, Jones, H. Smith, Clarke, Roberts, J. Adams, Ross, GeoTge, Sundgreen, J, Feeney, McElwain, Htsstler, Rayner, Taylor anff Bagge (the. last two are on tie doubtful list). We, understand that one or two more likely player* will soon be available. Forwards: Stewart, Dick, Scott, Clendon, Perkins, Adams, Rae, Wickham, Fitzmaurice, Dix Lummas, Bradley, Gosse, Pilcher,. Hemington, Killeen, Beardmore, Tapara, Langford, Tuppen. There is room for about five more players, which number would give sufficient spares to allow for injuries. ' Both teams axe likely to be stronger in the forwards. The backs offering should also give an account of themselves. Two or three of last year's Thirds are worthy of promotion, but we understand that they prefer to have another year in their grade. This team should also do well as some fairly hefty forwards are on hand, which should eliminate last year's weakness, which was lack of weight. Several new players are available for this team, including MeSherry (three-quarter or full back), Hewinson, Phillips>nd Thornton (forwards). Of last year's fourths, Mclntyre, Jenness, Hobbs, Morrison, Body, Logic, and Pyne have been training with a view to inclusion in the Third grade team, A Of- last season's team Silva, Waitai, Williams, Baker, Evans, Wright 2 Morrison, and Darby are open for selection
Fifth. Grade, —There is yet a little doubt about this team as a few more players are required. The age limit for this grade is 16 to 17. Will any boys who have not yet; joined up Teport to £he secretary at the Gymnasium to-nigiht (Thursday). , '. In last week's notes the name of R. B r Baker was missed out of the probable twenty for t-iie senior team. We beg to acknowledge receipt of a donation of £1/1/- from Mr. W. T Doig.
All members will regret. to hear of the serious illness of; their very staunch supporter and life member, Mr A. MeBain. We all wish him a very speedy recovery to health and strength, and hope in th neear future to see 'his well known figure on the side line enjoying the spectacle of tie team, in which he takes so much interest, notching a victory in the "A" Competitions.
The first round of fixtures has been drawn and Hutt meet Marist on the local ground. Ma-rist afe reported t« •have a strong team, consequently the local team will have to "step on it", to register a victory. Providing Hutt V best team is available a good game should result. One or two players are dotfbtful starters in the first game —
Baker is at present suffering f rom &p* pendicitis, which however, we are pleas* ed to-report will not necessitate an. operation. Ball had his tonsils removed early last week and may not be fit enough for the first game. McKayt suffered an injury in the Old Boys match which will probably affect his appearance. Judge, ex-Athletic and Auckland, a half back, has joined up and will most likely be behind the scrum in the first game.
All holders of tickets are requested to pay in right away to the secretary or assistant secretary (Mr. B. Killeen).
Arrangements are in train for-prac-tice matches against Petone teams for the third and sixth grades ibis Saturday. The games will probably be played on Strand Park.
