HUTT RIVER BOARD.

Tbe regular meeting of the Hutt JRiver Board was held on Tuesday night There, were present Mr. F. • Kawox, chairman, and Messrs G. A. Chapman, H. E. Leighton, C. Gostelow and J. Mitcieil. The Engineer (Mr. H. S!adden) was also in attendance.

The chairman reported that he kad met the residents of the Wyndrunt Estate and had come to a satisfaetoagr understanding. . . '

A deputation was Teceived from res^* dents of Alicetown—who presented .£) petition signed ,by 60 residents—complaining of the noise nuisance caused by the operations of a shingle plant, and lorries. It was stated/ that tfc/B work was going on all night,, making, rest impossible. ; •

The chairman explained that there were certain difficulties to be met and the Board would use every endeavour <ta have the nuisance stopped. ;'

Mr. Croft, a member of the deputation/ stated that the nuisance was moifl than the residents could bßar and tbaiti unless the trouble was. stopped Witihin a: ( week, application would be made to the Court for an injunction. • ,

The deputation^ then- retired.

After full discussion, on the motion of Mr. Mitchell the matter was left with the chairman with power to act.

A letter was received from t-lie Civic^ Association for a statement of the Board \s; Inscribed Loans—past, future and present: . .

On the motion of Mr. Mitchell it wag decided to inform the Association that it was at liberty to appoint its own auditor to inspect the Board V books ait the Association's.own expense.

A letter was received from Mr. Brody, of White's Line, making a suggestion as to dedicating certain land; on the boundary of his property for the formation of a road. ,

. Mr. Leig&ton moved that, if Mr. Broady could make suitable, arrangements with the Council, the Board would agree, to dedicate the necessaxy land. Mr. Mitchell seconded the mo-1 .tion,~ wihich was carried.

Mr. Leighton applied for leave of absence from the Board as lie was about to take a trip to the Old Country. The Board granted leave until the end of the year.

Mr. -wished. Mr. Leighton a pleasant voyage and hoped he would be able to renew his acquaintance with, the Board on his return.

Mjr. Gostelow said Mr. Leighton was to be congratulated on being, able to take a trip afteT suck. a short service on the Board. (Laughter).

Mr. Chapman made an 'appeal £<gr tree planting on, Gear Island in yierM of the probable fact that in say ten years, the island would be "required for a park'or .play ground.

The suggestion was strongly supported by Mr. Leighton, also Mr. Ilewer, who strongly favoured tree planting on an organised scale. .

On the motion of Mr. Gostelow seconded by Mr. Mitchell, Mr. Chapman was asked to report fully on the question at a future meeting. .

On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. Gostelow, the Board placed on record, its appreciation of the services of the Clerk, Mr. A. J. Gearing, for the prompt and efficient manner in which >he was able to present the annual: financial statement at the last meeting of the Board on Ist April.
