WOMEN'S INSTITUTE NEWS.

The steady growth in membership and importance of the Women's Institute Movement in New Zealand was well demonstrated at the Wellington Provincial Federation Annual Conf er,ence held at Palmerston North on April 10th. About 200 memb*ers and friends were present and delegates from practically every Institute in the Federation took part, Hutt district being represented by Mesdames Heathcote and Jenkins of Wainui-o-mata and Mesdames Howoll- and Gibson Young of, Stokes Valley.

The President, Mrs. Wa ring-Taylor (Shannon), gave a cordial welcome to the delegates and to Miss Jerome Spencer, chief organiser (Hawkes Bay), and Miss Stops, special organiser.

. Miss Spencer reported that the number of Institutes in the Dominion now totalled 100, and put forward < plans for the further development of Maori Institutes, which were heartily approved. •• "■---'> ... ■■■ . '

The annual report and balance, sheet were presented and gave evidence of the varied nature of the interests and activities of Women's Institutes.

The-following officers-were elected:-—* President, Mrs Waring^Taylor (re-elect-ed); Vice-Presidents Miss Grant and 'Mrs Kaye-Crew; Secretary, Mrs Noel West (re-elected); Treasurer, Miss Crawford (re-elected); Committee Mesdames Austin, Walker, Kaye, Cowlam and McCorkindale.

A Potato Competition for Miss Crawford's Shield, resulted in a win for Kopare with Waverley as runners-up.

Interesting reports were given by delegates and. in every case increasing membership and interest were reported.

Miss Stops, special organiser gave a wonderfully helpful address on arts and crafts as applied to "home-making^" stressing the importance of thorough- ' ness, simplicity and co-operation. She also exhibited many examples of vari-
