INCIDENTS AT LOTyE^HUTT
The" following incidents were heard at the last sitting of the Lower Enifc Court:-—
A defendant in a civil claim stateu, xbl answer to a question by Mr RotlrweH that he was Unable to make any off ex to reduce the amount of his account.
Mr Rothwell: Have you a statement of your- earnings during the, last twelve months f—No.
"Did you read your summonsf—JNTo.
—-Because I cannot read.
"Why not?"
Defendant explained that lie was brought up on the "West Coast and could only sign his own name. He was 39 years of age. , . ; -
Another defendant in a civil actioa stated that he could not see his way clear to make any offer to reduce his account as he had a wife and' five children ana was -unable to take a steady job owing
to war injuries;
The Magistrate: Did; yon go to see the fight on Saturday?
Defendant: No, I did not sir!
"I went.to see a man about an empty cart," was the excvfte offered by a defendant charged with being on licensed premises after'hours,
"It is a case of his character eomlng out, by drink, *' remarked the Magistrate after hearing evidence in an objßc/ne language charge. '
