GIRL GUIDES' FETE
The committees-of the Girl Guide Association held a garden fete in the grounds of th« Prime Minister's residence in Tinakori Boad on Saturday afternoon. Her Excellency, Lady Bledisloe, who opened the fete was re* ceived by a giaard of honour of Girl Guides, who, under their company leaders, lined the drive to the front steps,
where Miss Enid Bell, Provincial Commissioner, Mrs Martin Tweed, Divisional. Commissioner, and Mrs Bernard Wood, vice-president of the Association, Misses Scaly, Paterson and Wallcer, District Commissioners, waited. Lady Bledisloe, who was wearing green floral chiffon and pale green iat, wore the ribbon and badge of the G-uides. She was accompanied by Mrs Bathurst and Sir John Hanran, A.D.C., Miss Olphert, one of the Hutt Gudes, presented HfiT Excellency with a bouquet of flame coloured flowers. Mrs Tweed, in introducing Her Excellency, said that the Guides would be deligJited to hear that Lady Bledisloe, had consented to become president of .the Association. During the coming year the Chief Scout and Chief Guide of the World were expected to visit New Zealand and there would be much for the Guides to do, and so that they should not be^ financially embarassed, in their presentations, tlhe company committees had organised the fete, and Mrs Tweed tendorefl her thanks to all the ladies who had worked- so hard so that' the fete inigiht ibe a success. Lady Bledisloe thanked the "Guides for. their welcome. She said they had sent her a letter and flowers just after her arrival, and Her
Excellency expressed ' her appreciation of that gracious act. Her Excellency > said she felt glad to.follow Lady Alice Fergusson -as Dominion President, as she had always felt keenly ■ interested in the organisation, which, in seeking to. give girls a -happy, wholesome outlook, was creating a useful happy wom:\iihood. She -hoped that the fete would be most> successful and that the Guides would have no financial worry. when- the chief visited their shores. Lady Bledisloe then inspected the stalls which were erected on the lawn, and watched the display of inarching and. dancing given by the Guides. T>he display was most interesting, the girls figure marching, and /giving a wand tlance, and later a number of folk dances in costume. The Hutt Guides took part in- the figure marching, and also formed one of the .four companies who took part in -the sword dance, As is usual at sue-h functions there were a number of side-shows, such as Aunt Sally, and an "Art" Gallery, which was arranged in the garage. Jupp's Band was in attendance. The Hutt, Petone and Eastbourne Guides Committees were responsible for the wellstocked /produce and flower stall.' the stall-holders being:—Mrs Winter afcd Mrs Corser of Petone; and i>le following Hutt ladies: Miss Scaly, District Commissioner; Mesdames Olphert, Bofbinsdn r . Hurslt and Hansell; IM^3--dames Castle and Lowe (Heretaunfia); Miss Jackson ; and Miss Ellis (Hutt). Tinere was a very'large attendence and the financial result of .the fete should bo most satisfactory. A message conveying her good wishes was sent by Mrs J. G. Coates, Provincial President. -
