BY THE WAY.
• A fiutt mother was recently somewhat1 perturbed to find' that her son's ideas as to the ethics of a- scout were not as lucid as she could have wished. But the scout' was quite a young one, and -his Brownie sister, still younger. The mother had required her son to dig so/me potatoes. He got as fa.£ as the* vegetable garden,' when a seductive tree of, plums caught his eye.; ; The sight was too much for him, and, spade and bucket forgot, he succumbed to the delight of the'moment, when he spied his smajl sister gazing at him with round eyes. "Now, "look -here" was the surly command, "Don't you tell mum I took them, on your honour as a Brownie 1"* Whereat the Brownie was bo intimidated that I'm afraid her honour "as a Biownie," was pledged. Bwt somehow ' * Mum' * got -to know, and her miscreant son had to -have it niaile very clear to ihim that never again must his small sister's "honour as a Brownie" be used as a shield for hjs own dishonourable practices!
That .fortune favours the foolhardy, was, -amply. borne out in the * experience of, two Hutt girls, recently. Becoming very enamoured- of Wainui, w^th it 3 river, which.provides siieh excellent fishing and bathing, they frequently
cycled' over, and spent the day, but one day misfortune overtook them, for pne bicycle had a "blow out"—sue'h an effective one that it had to be. left\in the care of ari obliging farmer. This, of course, necessitated another trip to redeem it, so one fine morning the intrepid young woman set out ''doublebanking. '' Ail went welll till the descent of the -hill began, when the longsuffiering '' grid snapped in two, precipitating .one of the riders clear over the : head of the other, into a gorse bush, whence she .emerged bruised, bleeding, and shaken, to find her companion in similar plight. But at "this- opportune moment a motor lorry .hove in view, and its driver, enquired the whereabouts of a certain farmer. The' girls fortunately knew, , so^the, derelict, safely hidden, they proceeded- to the farm with tiieir berie-factoT, then returned home, ; calling for the disabled r grids' on , the way—^the lgnf ortuirate ' ' blowout,' ' .''.'atid 'the sections--of 'the, atiher: All were then conveyed^ merrily home to tie Lower Hutt, the adventurers, let us hope, the wiser for their experience!
