GAS BOARD

A meeting of the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board was held last week. There were present: Messrs W. G. Lodder (chairman), W. T. Strand, V. Jacobson, S. Clendon, W. G. Meldrum, C. P. Brocelbank and E. Hogg.

iThe Local Bodies wrote agreeing to hold a combined; picnic on February 26th at Day's Bay. An invitation was extended -to the chairman and members to be present.

Mr "W. Nash, M.P., wrote offering Ids services and co-operation to the Board in matters requiring consideration by Government or Parliament.

It was decided to thank Mr Nash for his offer and, should occasion arise the Board) would be pleased to avail themselves of his offer.

In reply to a .question by Mt Meldrum the chairman stated that an analysis ,of tar had been taken, but as only Dobson coal was being used at the time -the test was unsatisfactory. However, State coal was now being used and a test would be taken as soon as possible.

' The Managing Director of Messrs Brinsler and Co., Dunedin, wrote asking if the Board desires a' gas demonstration which could be arranged.

Mr Broekelbank moved that a demonstration be held at a convenient date, and if possible a; shop be secured in the main street for the purpose.

Mr Hogg seconded. —Carried. The chairman reported that the quality of the gas is now very good.

The Gas Manager (Mr H. Appleyard) reported for the ;month as follows:—• Gas carbonised 510 tons, 12cwt; gas manufactured 9,537,000 cubic feet; average per ton 16,732 cubic feet; increased manufacture over January, 1929, 408,000 cubic feet. Coal in stock 123 tons, IScwt, 2qrs. ;

The coal-stocks were low at the end of the month, but larger supplies are being forwarded this month when stocks will be built up. During the month 69 tons, 14cwt, Iqr of coke and 4479 gallons of tar were solo;. ,-

The third setting :> of retorts has been completed and put into operation. The fourth" setting is nearing completion and will be put into commission about the middle of February. Work is well in hand with the new retort house and'the station meter is nearing completion.

During the month 32 new services, 25 new cookers, 6 combination cookers, 2 renewal cookers, 7 gas coppers ,2 ealiphonts, one hotplate and 35 new meters were .installed, anci 75 metere were changed. ,
