STRANGE RAILWAY MISHAPS
Old-time railway accidents in Eng.land were very different, in nature from those that happen in these days. It would' not be possible to-day for many of the crazy accidents to happen which marked the »early developments of the railways. - ' ' ■ - ■ In the.returns for the years 1846-50, flow at the. Ministry of Transport, the following are among the mishaps reported:— • . . . '' Trespasser run over while sitting upon the rails in a state of .intoxication. "William Fieldsen, guard, struck by a bridge while he was 'arranging luggage on the top of his train.'* "Guard blown off a goods-train with the roof of the van;oti which he was seat ed during a heavy gale of winci and had one of-his.haunch bron.es fractured. . "George Millet, run over .while - imprudently standing on the lines reading a letter." :
