The local poultry breeder, Mr? A'. Baker, scored a • number of .successes with his white leghorn rooster at the Hutt Valley Poultry Show last week, including the award for the best bird in the show.

At about 7.15 last Friday morning a flock of stud Southdown sheep was being driven-over the Pipe Bridge, wihen a railway bus, driven by a man named Partington, ran into the mob and eight of the animals weTe killed. The sheep were the "Bivermead" Southdown stud flock which had been built up by Mr. H. E. Leighton, and were recently sold to Mr. C. Cottle of Levin, where they were to have been railed that morning. The" loss to Mr Cottle is a very severe one as selected flocks of this breed of sheep are very difficult

to acquire.

Alice Pryke, of the Eastern Hutt School, was awarded ~the gold medal donated by Messrs Hooson 's Ltd, for the best exhibit of penmanship by girls at the Hutt Valley Poultry Show last week. This competition was open to all children attending any primary school in the Hutt. "Valley including Eastbourne. The boys prize was won' by Donald Smith of Upper Hutt.

All Rug/by followers and friends will be pleased to learn of Mr. W. George's convalescence from PalmeTston North Hospital, where he has been for some time and all will wish this popular Hutt player a,speedy recovery.

The Hutt; Central School Committee has arranged a euchre evening for Saturday next. Oards will be indulged in until 10 p.m, then a dance .will be enjoyed until midnight. These social evenings are always very popular and do much to bring together those who are interested in' the work, of the school committee. - ; '

The Mo'era Branch of • the Girl Guides has arranged; to hold a social on 3ist of this- month to raise funds to enable them to participate in the rally on the Petone Recreation Ground on 3rd August. A good programme has been arranged including solo items by tie Girl Guides'and marching by the troupe. Dancing s Will ~also be enjoyed and every effort made to provide a pleasant evening. All interested in this -work are cordially invited to assist this young troop to-overcome their financial difficulties. . .
