GAS BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board was held on Tuesday night. There were present the Chairman W. G. Lodder) and Messrs V. Jacobson, S. Clendon, W. G. Meldrum, C. P. Brockelbank and E. Hogg.

An apology was received from Mr W. T. Strand, who was unable to be present.

The General Manager, New Zealand Railways wrote advising an increase in the price of coal supplied to the Board and asking the board to draw the least possible amount of coal from their reserve.

The Secretary pointed out that owing to the strike in Australia,the price of coal has increased by 11/4 per ton.

Mr Meldrum, asked if the board could not use State coal.

.The chairman said they were using as much State coal as possible, but they needed a supply of Newcastle to make the necessary quantity of gas. The board was laying in a store of as much coal as it could get but the demand was large eben for natibe coal.

A- report of the Board's tar from the Dominion Analyst showed that the analysis was most satisfactory.

The gas manager (Mr H. Appleyard) reported that 675 tons, lOewt of coal was carbonised during the month and y.451,000 cubic feet of gas was manufactured. Amount of coal in stock 109 cons 17cwt 3qrs. The coal supplied by the Bailway Department is being delivered fairly regular each week and as I have now got the extra six retorts in commission~l am able to use from 25 to 30 tons of State coal per week. Coke sold amounted to 149 tons 4cwt and on June 1, 8 tons of coke was in stock. 7279 gallons of tar was sold and there are 200 gallons in stock. During the month 203 chains 57ft of main was laid. Forty-eight new services were installed, 44 cookers, 6 combination cookers, 13 coppers, 8 caliphonts, 5 hotplates, 10 gas fires, 66 new meters and 59 meters were changed and 19 repaired.
