ST. JOHN AMBULANCE.

A NEW BRANCH OF WORK

We are pleased, to be al?le to announce that a new activity of St. Joan Ambulance work has been established in the Hutt District and the Hutt tesidents are to be congratulated on- the fact that this is the first of its kind to be set on- foot in the /Wellington district. We refer to% a ''Medical Comforts Depot" where, on an OTder from a medical man or an application from any one in need, articles necessary for the greater comfort of tae sick, and not psually found in s-ll homes, may be obtained On loan. A small nominal charge will be made, .iot with the idea of making profit, but merely to provide for replacements-and to gradually increaSe the stock of articles available. The initial stock of die

depot is not a large one, but it is hoped as time advances and needs are bolter ascertained, to increase it."

Any one who is interested, in the movement is invited- to contribute, cither by monetary gifts, however small, or by articles suitable for sick room use ~ such as crutches, splints, invalid

chairs, hot water bags etc. Theae may be sent to Mts. P. Dement, Birdwood road, who'" has undertaken -the voluntary work of managing the depot.

- Most of our readers are familiar with, at any Tate, one branch of ?t. John Ambulance work, viz., the rendering of first aid on sports fields-»r. in street accidents. * These are, however, activities perhaps not so .well known: because they, do not nieet ■ the public eye to the same extent. In t>»e City of Wellington, for instance, throe trained nurses are constantly occupied attending to the sick poor, other members give • much voluntary service i o sick people in their homes after leaving the hospital while others again train both men and women to render help in emergencies. With regard to tfi~e last named it is hoped in the near future to commence classes in the Hutt in order that any so desiring may be given the rudiments of training to * c of~ assistance in the great cause of humanity-^—service to one 's-fellow creatures. Any who desire to join First Aid of Home Nursing classes are asked to communicate With Mrs Dement who who will be pleased to supply all necessary information. We -• feel th?.t the cause is worthy o£ support and that ouir residents are fortunate in the work of St. John in their midst. One of its. mottoes is '.'For the Service of'^Mankind'" so we welcome '. it and wish it all success in its new efforts.
