The engineer (Mr Bush) reported to the Council on Monday night that the formation of the whole of the western approach of the new bridge, with the. exception of footpaths, has been completed and the subgrade formed up and roiled, and a 7in. depth of soling rock laid and consolidated. On the eastern side the formation, excepting footpaths, is practically completed in the new street, arid also on the continuation of Main Street. The Gas Board have connected up their new 6in booster main and have also laid a portion of the, 12in. main from the- eastern end of the new street to the eastern end of the bridge. This main lies under the footpath for its full length. • A 2in. bituminous ''Hotmix" carpet has been laid on the bridge deck by the Highways Board during the month, the d«ck being previously thoroughly roughened. Donnelly's corner has been set back and rounded off, and 110 ft. of kerbing laid complete with a new sump and CQnn^ction to the storm sewer. A new sump and connection has- also been constructed on. the school side of Railway avenue to take additional water from the ramp. A new sump and connection has also been laid opposite the old Police station to drain the dip which will exist in the continuation of Main street on this side until the existing ramp to the old bridge is re-graded. It was decided to invite the Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) to perform the ceremony, and the matter was left in the hands of the Works Committee to arrange. Representatives of the local bodies contributing are also to be invited. It is intended to make a gala day of the event.
