N.Z ALPINE AND ROCK GARDEN SOCIETY
—, — v , At the Lower Hutt Borough. Council meeting last evening the following letteT was received from Mr. T. W. Attwood, F.R.H.S., WJD.H., Director of the N.Z. Alpine an^d Rock Garden Society:—. • "I am instructed by my executive to respectfully request the Hutt Borough Council to give effect to the following resolution passed at a general meeting of the above Society: 'That the Borough Council be invited to hand over,' with the consent of the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society, to the New, Zealand Alpine and . Bock Garden Society, the area comprising all the low-lying ground and banks shown on their -plan behind the Eiddiford Baths for beautifying and demonstration purposes.' "As you are doubtless aware the Society has been constituted with headquarters at Lower Hutt and it is hoped to be the means of serving <a very useful purpose in assisting in the, beautiification of unsightlyfspots from time to time situated under the council's jurisdiction. We have prepared a set of Rules, copy of which I will forward, you as soon as printed, for filing purposes. "One of the objects of the Society as set out in its By-laws is:—'To build, construct and maintain in. the Riddif ord PaTk, Lower Hutt, a Rock, Alpine and Bog Garden, which shall be known as "The National Rock Garden of New Zealand." '
"Because the situation particularly lends itself to such, purpose, we are extremely anxious that the garden shall be the best of its kind in the world, a credit to the Borough, and a worthy addition to the many attractions of ou^r beautiful Valley.
"The cost of such a lay-out will be very considerable, but we do not propose to aim" at completion inside of three or fout years. I am hoping to give the Council before long a general idea of what our completed garden will be, and we are expecting to get the constructional work under way'at once, and have some small section built by Show time next month. - I take' this opportunity of expressing our deep appreciation of the Council's attitude towards the Society in the woTk that has been already done on the .ground.
"In the meantime we are depending on the co-operation, goodwill, and ■practical assistance of the Council, as far as may be."
The Mayor said he felt sure the Council'would give the movement every assistance and encouragement. It would be an excellent work and a credit to the borough. He moved that the Council place on record its appreciation of the offer * and assuring the Society of every assistance.
Cr. Campbell asked whether the Hutt Valley Horticultural 'Society had been consulted. -
The Mayor—Yes, and they will give it every consideration and work together.
Cr. Mitchell, chairman of the Scenic Committee, stated that the matter had the support of his committee.
Gr. Hobbs in seconding the resolution, said the Society should be encouraged in the good work.
