POWER BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board was held on Thursday afternoon. Present: Messrs W. H. P. Barber (chair), A. J. McCurdy, A. Anderson, S. Blaekley, A. J. Hobbs, H. Lawrence, E. Windley, L. Stewart, A. Walker, A. Press and J.. W. MeEwan.

The Lower Hutt Borough Council applied for additional street lights as follows: —St. Alban's Estate, Awamotu Street, (3), Waiwetu South, Main street, Eandwick Road, Douglas Street, Wainui Road, and Bell Road.

The request was "agreed to and a recommendation be made that 60 c.p. lamps be used.

The Makara County Council wrote asking that a new lamp be erected in Wakefield Road, Johnsonville, and two poles shifted in East Porirua. — Agreed to.

The Petone Borough Council wrote asking that certain poles be shifted owing to alterations in streets. The Council would give every assistance but would not bear any of the cost. The Council wished to give notice that if any accident occurred"" the Board would be held responsible.

The Association Solicitor stated that the Power Board had to bear the cost of shifting poles according to the law. '

Mr Lawrence stated that a test case should be made. The shifting of poles was becoming a big matter.

Mr Press moved that the Petone Borough. Council be notified that the Board would remove the poles, but would not accept any responsibility for the cost.

Mr Lawrence seconded. —Carried

Mr MeEwan moved that the opinion of the Board's Solicitor be obtained as to the Board's liability re •shifting

poles,

Mr. Anderson seconded.—Carried

The United Civic Association wrote asking for a copy of the Balance Sheet.

' It was decided to inform the Association that they could obtain a copy at the office.

E. Hunger, a poultry farmer, wrote stating that the current had been turned off without notifying Mm, thereby causing a great loss among his chickens. He claimed £15 as compensation. Referred to the Board's Solicitor to see if the Board had any liability. -Mr W. Cairns wrote making a request from special rates for lighting Petrol Stations. Mr McCurdy. stated that the cost was not more than 1/- a night. Mr Blacklcy said the rate should be on the commercial basis. The Lower Hutt Business Mens' Association wrote complaining of the high cost of shop lighting and asking for a •reduction. A deputation consisting of Messrs Powei', Wallace, Ackroyd and Smith was introduced by Mr Hobbs. Mr Power said they were interested in the lighting during the shopping week at Lower Hutt. They proposed to put in more flood lights and ■would ask the Board to supply the current, and allow the leads to come from the present existing lines. They would like extra street lamps from the bridge to King's Road as the street was badly lighted at present. If the street lamps were put up temporary then they hoped to urge on the Council to make it permanent. The chairman thanked the deputation and said they would go into the financial position and give it their favourable consideration.

-Mr McCurdy moved that the Business Mens' Association be notified that the cost of current would be £26 plus cost of erection and dismantling* Mr Lawrencse seconded. —Carried.

Mr L. C. Doile, Inspector, wrote resigning his position. The resignation was received with regret.

The -engineer reported that the number of consumers at date was 7490, electric ranges installed 720, cowplants 49. water fieaters 460

Wakefield and Co wrote asking permission to erect a flood light on the Board's pole-at N^gahatwanga. Granted subject to the engineer's approval.

•Jones and Co., WTote asking for a special rate for heating and cooMng demonstrations. No action taken.

The "Waiwetu Progressive Association wrote asking that a receiving office be set up for two days a month.
