OYSTER SHELLS AND SHINGLE

COMPLAINTS TO BOARD.

POLICE AID TO BE INVOKED

Sacks of putrid fish and other decomposed matter are being thrown over the Pipe Bridge at the rear of the Hutt Trotting Club's grandstand into the Waiwhetu Stream according to statements made at a meeting of the Hutt Eiver Board on Thursday. So bad was the stench in the vicinity of the bridge on a recent evening that the Mayor of Lower Hutt and chairman of the board (Mr W. T. Strand) was "attracted to the scene when out for a stroll just before .dusk. "It is most disgusting" said Mr Strand at Thursday night's board meeting, "the dumping that is being done. I have taken the liberty of asking the Town Clerk of Lower Hutt to offer a reward to anyone giving information as to who deposited

the offal." Mr Strand, mentioned that ■shingle contractors were endeavouring to obtain shingle free from shell from/ below the bridge, but the deposits made it extremely difficult.

. The clerk read a letter he had received on the subject from Me Arthur Bros. Ltd., suppliers of washed river sand and graded crude gravel. "We are considerably inconvenienced '' wrote the company "through large quantities of oyster shells being dumped over the the side of the pipe bridge. These shells are carried down by the current and out dreclge picks them up, and it is necessary for us to employ labour in picking them out of the gravel. We should be glad to know if your board can take steps to stop 'this practice."

The board decided to invoke the aid of the Lower Hutt and Petone Police, and also that of the Health Department, with a view to putting an end

to tho practice.
