GAS BOARD

A meeting of the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Board was held on Tuesday 11th. Present: Messrs W. G. Lodder (chairman), W. T. Strand, W. G. Meldrum, G. P. Brockelbank, E. Hogg, V. Jacobson. Messrs Babbidge Ltd., wrote asking permission to hold a week's cookery demonstration in Hutt and Petone to demonstrate the great improvement made in gas cookery by the "World Wonder.'' Mr Meldrum moved that permission be granted provided the demonstrations are held during the month of January. Mr Strand seconded and thought they should make a big effort to increase the sale of cookers. The motion was carried. Messrs Boyd and Jones, of Richmond Street wrote complaining of the low pressure of the gas in that area. The manager stated that the gas main ran alongside the sewerage and the pipes had sagged. They would have to be regraded. In reply to the chairman the manager stated he had the work now in ! hand and would regrade the pipes aa soon as possible. The chairman reported that a meeting of the employees had been held to consider the superannuation scheme. They were addressed by two representatives of the Government Department, and at the close of the meeting 34 men were agreeable to join, 10 against, and 3 doubtful. The secretary stated the superannuation scheme would cost the board about £600. Mr Strand said he was in favour of the scheme and" the Board should pay the amount. The scheme was sound and it made provision for the men. Mr Jaeobson moved that the Board adopt the scheme as it was the right thing to do. Mr Meldrum seconded. —Carried. The gas manager reported that for the month of August 579 tons, lOcwt of coal was carbonised, and 8.836,000 cubic feet of gas manufactured, the [ average make per ton being 15,247 cubic feet, 41 gas cookers were sold, 2 coppers, 10 caliphonts, 11 gas fires.
