TELEPHONE TOLL CALLS

Telephone subscribers when making toll calls to Wellington will have noticed a great improvement in the efficiency pf. the telephone exchange. Formerly the subscriber was told that the exchange would ring him when the ! connection -was made; this generally meant a delay of possibly five or ten minutes. At present subscribers are asked to hold the line and the dialling of the call is carried out by the local operator whereby the connection is made immediately, unless the lines are ! overloaded or the number required is engaged. This innovation is an enormous advantage to ±he public and is one that srjiould tend to alleviate the position until the full automatic system is supplied. We understand that\ the Hutt Exchange is one of the first to adopt this new ~ method of direct dialling of foil calls. • >,».*'- v
