HUTT VALLEY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

A well attended meeting of the General Committee was held on Wednesday, August Ist., in the Council Chambers. The schedule for. the year 1928-29 was further considered and adopted. A fruit section was inserted in the Autumn Show, with a competition for commercial growers which should be of educational value to the Hutt residents, It was decided to instal electric lieght in the secretary's office, which will be open on Friday evenings from 7 to 8 o'clock for the convenience of members. >* Thirty-three members have been elected since the beginning of the year. A letter was received . from the Waiwetu Progressive Association asking for lecturers on various phases of gardening at their monthly meetings. Several members offered to assist on Tuesday, 14th August at St. Paul's - School-room, White 's Line. The President (Mr. L. T. Watkins), further outlined the plan for the February Show in Riddiford Park which includes a model garden competition, in miniature —the flowers, gladioli, asters,, dahlias and vegetables to be in marquees. This is on the lines of the Chelsea Fair and will give scope for the landscape gardener and be of great interest and value to the public. A very generous offer has been made by three gentlemen in jthe Hutt to insrtruct classes and provide plants, etc., in dahlia and aster growing on condition that the members show the result in the February Show. These classes are to consist of 6 adults and 6 juveniles (under 18), for dahlias, and 6 adults and 6 juveniles for asters. You are invited to send your name as early as possible to the secretary, P.O. Box 19, if you wish to take advantage of this opportunity. This should appeal to the Girl Guides and Boy Scouts.

Mr. R. Wilson has donated a handsome rose bowl for competition in the dahlia class, with a miniature for each year.

The Spring Show dates are 20th and 21st September.
