TRENTHAM STEEPLECHASE • CAKNOTAL COMICAL, TABOO AND PE-NEUS SHOW OUT. The handicaps for the first day of the 'Trentham Steeplechase Carnival made their appearance on Tuesday. It was expected that Beau Cavalier would ihead the list in .the big steeplechase -event. Comical (10.9), Maunga (10.-1), and Kawini (10.9) are all favourably handicapped. Of the 9.0 division, Mixed Heather appears to be the best. At present, it looks as if the race -will end in a tussle between GOMI--CAL, MAUNOA/ and MIXED HEATHER. Taboo, who acts really well in Tieavy going, has 9.12 opposite his name in the Whyte Memorial Handicap. If lie comes North, he will be very hard to beat. Bisox (9.0) and Queen Arch (9.9) arc also nicely handicapped. Peneus (10.1) and Troilus (9.0) stand out in the list of those handicapped for the Trentham Hurdles Handicap. TE KUTTI — THIS SATURDAY. HORSES IN FORM. PukeTumu and Pompeius. Hyde Park and Oscar. Pouri and Mangani. Mervettte and Modest Boy. Potoanui and Prince Lw. Brainpton and Nassock. Appellant and King Lu. ASHBTJRTON — SATTTRDAY. The following horses —if started— :are likely to be well supported:— Tarn G-len. Despot. Captain Sarto. Bronstell. Waihemo. NOTES AND COMMENTS. Oriflamb is a dashing performer over -the brush fences. Unfortunately, he does not stay too well. He is a probable competitor at the 'coming Trentham Carnival. . * * * * * It is on ,the cards that. unsoundness may prevent Wharncliffe racing for some time. ' * *■ * *~' * So far Despot has never done anything to suggest that he will even do very much good for his owner. He will probably be seen out at the Tientham Carnival. * * * * * Cold Steel, a winner -of the Wanganui Cup, is showing improvement in liic schooling essays over the fences. By Martian out of Snowball, ther^ Is no reason why he; should not make good in this department. **"* • , * Just So should be well up Qn the prize-winning list at the Trentham Carnival. He performed with credit at the recent Otaki Meeting. ***** Bonogne should be worth watching at Wellington if the going is to his liking. * * * * * Keen judges are selecting COMICAL to run well in both tlie Wellington Steeplechase and Winter Hurdles. He •will probably have the services of A. McDonald in the steeplechase event. **' * * * Sir Wai still has the habit of running down every fence in his schooling essays. *** * . * Shining Armour is capable of good performances in soft going. He will bo seen in action at the Trentham Carnival. * * * ♦ • Remember, if the going is on the firm side, Tuki will be hard to dispose of in the Wellington Steeplechase. * * * * * Rapier has made a re-appearance on the Riccarton tracks. * * •' *' • * Prince L«u is Tegarded in the north, as a very promising hurdler.
R. Beale has accepted a retainer to ride for Mr Or. Gerard next season. ***** Two-year-olds are eligible to run in two races at the Wellington winter meeting. * . * * * * A five furlong Maiden Stakes figures on th£ Christehurch Hunt Club's programme. ***** The Auckland Racing Club paid £17,684 18s. 2d. in taxation in connection with the winter meeting. * * * * * Eaton Bells paid a fruitless visit to Tra&tor, and as. a result has rejoined J. Ruttledge's stable. ***** There does not seem much reason to "sound the loud trumpet" over Ihe class of 'chaser in commission. G-lendowie was under offer at 1200gns prior to the. Auckland winter meeting where he won 2600sovs. in stakes. The Paladin gelding Arikiwni, who ran second to Pink Note in the Dunodin Cup, has been entered for the Melbourne Cup.
