H.V. HARRIERS
Last Saturday the five mile Ewart Oup was contested for at the Hutt Park. A bleak southerly wind did not make running conditions very pleasant. The trail set out by Marshall, Stapelton and Goodall was a two lap course, starting from tho Hutt Park Grandstand to go through the eastern pines on to the Gracefield Road, past the Maori Cemetery along the beach to the paddocks to crass through the new Tailway workshops and back into the Park again. A field of 25 runners went to the start ing post. Bayne and Andrews were on the scratch mark, the limit men Coker and Shardlow having an Smin advantage on them, At the completion of the first lap the positions saw Coker leading by 300 , yards with Shardlow second and Jenner third. Jenner (handicap 4 mm) had at this particular stage gained imin on the scratch men, their time standing at lGmin 40sec. Coker held his lead never at any time being troubled with the | opposition and eventually came home a winner with 200 yards to spare in the time of 42min 17aee. Gilchrist was second, his handicap of fimin making the time 42min 49s cc. Jenner filled third place, his time recording 42min 54see. In the second lap Andrews lost his comrade Bayne, who retired indisposed. However, he did remarkably well and eamo up into fourth jylaee to gain fastest time. His actual runing time was i' 35min. 40see. Sanders secured second fastest time while Matsdn, a new arrival from Auckland showed promise by running away with third fastest time. The race next Saturday is at Masterton for the Sanders Cup. This is at present in possession of the country club, .having last year retained it from the Valley Club. The local boys last year were handicapped by the lack of support, but this season's event gives promise ■of the Hutt Valley coming out on top, as they are considered the most formidable club in the Wellington district at the present- time. Masterton will be without B. A. Rose and in this case Campbell (Masterton) and Andrews (Hutt .Valley) should be the first two men home. The course is over a 6i miles and the distance and country will no doubt suit the Valley boys. Mastertoxi of course, have^been training hard and will strive to keep their colours flying. "A number of supporters are making the trip with the boys aud a special bus will leave the Petone Post Office at 7.30 a.mf-on Saturday. . / .. iADIES' SECTION ■: i'•vrV 11 n - . . .
