AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

The success of the recent meeting of the Lower Hutt Amateur Athletic Club, held on the Recreation Reserve, was well deserved. The presence of visiting athletes from Australia was a gi-eat innovation on its part and attracted a record attendance in its turn. The Borough's welcome to these arid local contestants augurs well for the future of sport of every kind in this district. Mayor Strand's words of welcome to Mr. R. Coombes, president of the A.A.U., and its secretary, Mr. E. S. Marks, delighted the Australian competitors immensely, and were reciprocated in kind, with an added eulogy of the grounds upon which the contest was held. The next time we hope Mayor Stran dand Councillors will be able to show equally notable and celebrated athletic visitors over Gear Island with a thousand happy tennis, cricket, and kindred sportsmen playing upon it, their welcome to the Hutt Valley even more enthusiastically to acclaim.
