Musical Entertainment.

On Thursday, 29th September, in St. James' Hall, Woburn Road, an entertainment was given under the auspices of St. Stephen's Bible . Classes, the proceeds of which will be devoted to their Tennis Club and general church funds. The first part of the pragramme consisted of vocal solos, contributed by Miss Ailsa Nicol, Mrs. Phillips, Messrs. Wall, Pargeter and Fordie, and a duet by Mrs. Phillips and Mr. Fordie. These were greatly appreciated, but owing to lack of time encores were not allowed. The second pnrt of the programme was a musical play entitled "The Itev. Dayton Up-to-dnte," which was thoroughly enjoyed by a very large audience. The old-frishioned get-up of the lady performers in their bonnets and wide skirts caused much amusement. Unfortunately two of the principal performers were unavoidably absent, and their places had to be filled at the last moment by substitutes, who under the circumstances did remarkably well. The bright songs and choruses, accompanied by a small orchestra, were heartily sung, and the elocutionary pai't of the entertainment was clearly and distinctly spoken. Where all did so well it would be invidious to single out any particular performer, but too much praise cannot be given to Miss Finlay for her very efficient work as accompanist. Special thanks are due to Mr. Claude M. Haydon for his work in writing out the parts for the various instruments of the orchestra. A special vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Giesen to all those who had contributed to the evening's entertainment, more especially to Mrs. Ferguson and Mr. Ksrsley, who had given much time and care in training the members for their various parts in the play. At the close of the performance floral tributes and bo-xes of chocolates were handed up to the delighted performers who had taken the principal parts. Owing to numerous requests, it has been decided to repeat the play at an early date, the proceeds from which will be devoted to the fund for a Presbyterian Hall at the Moera Settlement.
