CRICKET NOTES.
The local Cricket Club will hold its first practice on the Recreation Ground on Saturday, Bth October. Evening practice, which is confined^to Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, will commence on 11th October. . All members and intendi ng members should make a point of attending at the practice nets in order to give the selectors every opportunity of judging their capabilities prior to the selection of the teams for the first round of matches. The competitions will open on Saturday, 15th October, and as the first round of matches is usually wo n by the fittest team all players should endeavour to get into fdrm at once. The indications are that the Club will enter six teams again this year, viz., Senior, Junior, A, B and C, Thir-J and Fourth Grades. The teams for the first rounds will be selected at 6.30 p.m. on 13th October, and last year's field and vicecaptains should be present to assist. The Club has again secured the services of that veteran representative cricketer, L. T. Cobcroft, to coach the juniors on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. It is a great privilege for the juniors to receive free coaching from such an_ experienced coach, and they should bear in mind that if the coach is going to achieve the best results regular and punctual appearance at the nets is imperative. The season's prospects appear bright. Chief interest naturally centres around the Senior Eleven, which has won the Senior Championship two years in succession, with the loss of only one game. Of last year's team the following are again available:— L. Beard, A. Aldersley, H. Nunn, H. Watson, H. Tattersall, E. McLeod, and G. Gibson. A. McSweeney id doubtful. H. McGirr will not return from England until the end of October or early in November. G. Williams (transferred) and Shannahan (sick) are not available. This will give the promising juniors a chance of demonstrating their fitness for senior cricket. It is understood there are several players from other centres now domiciled in the Hutt, and the Club's officials are anxious to enrol them. Several have already been enrolled, and others will be welcomed. Members and supporters will regret that that fine all-round sport, J. Shannahan, will not be able to take his. place in the team this year on account of illness resulting from an accident on the football field two years ago.
