Essay Competition.

We notice that one of the local schools was very successful in. a recent open essay competition - which had been offered by the Wellington Manufacturers' Association upon the subject, "Why we should buy and use New Zealand-made goods." This appears to be a step in the right direction as the scholars are trained in the knowledge of locally-manufac-tured articles. The following is the list of local prize-winners: Standard 6, Mollie Best, 2nd, 1 guinea; 5/prizes were won by Ailsa King, Den-

nis Warburton and V. England. Standard 5: Tom Lister, Ist, 2 guineas; Elliott Wallace, 2nd, 1 guinea; George Wilson, Srd, 10/6; 5/- prizes were won by: May Ching, Grace Carter, Dora Cunningham, Maggie Johnston, Marie Wallace, Myfawny Collie, Oscar Miller, Colin McDougall, Olga Pope, Connie Williams, Alan Alexander, and Kitty Matthews. The following competitors were also successful in a recent writing competition in connection with the Poultry Association's Show: Girls, Ist, Ailsa King, medallist. Boys: Ist, Reggie Mclntyre, medallist. Harry Jackson (Standard 5) won the second prize (10/-) in the recent SelfHelp writing competition.
