COUNCIL NOTES.
At the last meeting of the Borough Council, on the recommendation of the Finance Committee it was agreed to write off rates owing by the Hutt Park Committee for years 1924 to 1927 amounting to £249/7/6. It was also decided to write off all native rates outstanding to March 31st, 1925, amounting to £4814/13/5. Speaking of the Children's Playground, which will be opened next week, the Mayor stated that a gentleman unknown had donated £50 towards equipping the grounds. A resident wrote protesting against a certain timber company being allowed to operate saws, etc., on the site adjacent to the present pumping station in Riverbank Street, as it would be a source of annoyance to the residents in the locality. It was decided to receive a deputation of the petitioners.
On the recommendation of the Finance Committee, Mr. Harboard was placed on the permanent clerical staff. The Mayor stated that from his own observations of the work that was being done by the unemployed in the Borough it was very satisfactory, and compared favourably with borough work in general. In answer to Councillor Campbell's question as to what attitude the Council would adopt in regard to the proposed purchase of the buses by the Government, the Mayor stated that if there is any suggestion to deprive the Borough of its present bus service the Council will be alive to the situation. On the motion of the Mayor it was unanimously agreed to send a letter of congratulation to Mr. Sidey, M.P., on the passing of his Daylight Saving Bill.
