Sporting News. —The recent fight in the Borough Council Chamber at Petone has been awarded to Councillor Schofield on points. ♦ ♦ ♦ The circulation of this paper has been increased to 2,850 copies and is now read by twelve thousand people. If an advertiser takes a four-inch double column in the "News" he can tell his story to twelve thousand people for the modest sum of one-ninth of a farthing per head! • ♦ • The brown marsh and the black, gnat are taking well in the Belmont stream just now. The opening of the season saw a large number of fishermen in the district. * * * The W.E.A. journal "Highway" is a periodical that you should read. It is edited by Professor Hunter and is sold at the price of 3/6 annually. Full particulars can be obtained on ringing Tel. 326. * * * The Girls' Friendly Society, which meets every Monday night, has made arrangements to teach the members basket work, raffia work and macrame work. A games evening will be held monthly, to which all girls are cordially invited. * * • Last Sunday for the first time this season swimmers have been seen in the river. Probably they are influenced by the Summertime Bill. ♦ * * In this connection we have noticed His Worship the Mayor up betimes in the morning. Verily, Summertime Bill. > ♦ ♦ If the Hutt cannot shine at Rugby, it at least can shoot! The local Miniature Rifle Club has this season beaten all comers, holding many records of which the district can well be proud. A full account of their doings will be published in our next issue. * ♦ * The rainfall for September was 348 points, or 3 inches 48 points. Rain fell on 17 days, the maximum being on the 20th, when 97 points fell. * • * The Boreugh Brass Band has affiliated with the Wellington District Combined Bands Association, and will take part in the contests being held in Wellington this week-end. • * • The wonder child, Ismay Mcllroy, will perform at the Dental Clinic concert on 17th. See advertisement. • ♦ • Shopping Week will commence in the Hutt on the 2Cth. An attractive programme of amusements is being arranged in the Main Street.
