SPRING FLOWER SHOW.
ALL PREVIOUS RECORDS BEATEN. The Hutt Valley Horticultural Society's Annual Spring: Show, which has for many years been regarded as the premier Daffodil Show of New Zealand, was held on the 14th and 15th September, and attracted a large number of visitors from all parts of the Dominion. The Society had all the luck this year, as the weather left nothing to be desired and an unusually large number of people came from Wellington to see the wonderful display of flowers. Her Excellency, Lady Alice Fergusson, visited the show unofficially on Thursday afternoon and expressed the keenest interest in the exhibits. Her Excellency was conducted round the show by the President, and Lady Roberts. The Hon. T. M. Wilford, the Member for the district), accompanied by Mrs. Wilford, opened the show, and in a very interesting speech described his experiences at some of the great flower shows at Home and on the Continent. This year's show establishes an easy record not only for New Zealand but probably for Australasia. Both socially and financially it was a wonderful success. Amateur and professional growers came from all parts of both Islands to see the latest creations in spring flowers. One enthusiast motored 150 miles that morning expressly to see the show. Another was so impressed that he wired for his wife to come from Feilding to see for herself. The fact of the National Daffodil Society of New Zealand holding its first show under the same roof was of course in itself a great attraction and brought many great horticulturists together. The door takings of £85 11s. 6d. are quite remarkable considering that over 1,200 tickets are issued by the Society to its annual members. The tea rooms, under the capable direction of Mrs. T. O. Bishop and an energetic ladies' committee were well patronised, and the flower stall conducted by Mrs. and Miss Alexander and Miss Kitto was well supplied with beautiful blooms through the generosity of local friends. The proceeds from both of these departments added materially to the Society's funds. The Cooper Memorial Gold Medal and the North Island Amateur Championship medal were both manufactured by W. R. Bock and Son, of Wellington, and reflect great. credit on the local firm. We regret space will not permit us to publish prize list.
