"D.Y.K."

Broadcasting from the "Hutt News" Office, Main Street. The local rainfall for August was 10 inches 12 points. Rain fell on 2?> days and on two days there was a trace only. *■ * * Not every city has its Town Hall illuminated with a spot light, but then some towns have a little regard for the safety of motorists in their Main Street, and prohibit glaring lights. * * * The railway ramp on the Main Road between Hutt and Petone has. not yet been illuminated by the Petone Borough Council, under whose jurisdiction it is. We understand that the Petone and Hutt Gas Lighting Board is to be approached with a view to using the ramp as an "advertisement. * ♦ * Now that the Library has been moved to its new quarters, it appears to be larger than previously. Many old and probably valuable books previously hidden in the Council safe have been brought to light and placed on the shelves. The only fault that we can find is the footpath outside which compels the studious to run the gauntlet before entering the building. Literally spoiling the ship for a 'haporth of tar. * * * Some evil-intentioned people have secured a new amusement by stealing stray coppers and other portable valuables from houses in the neighbourhood of Queen's Road. We advise householders to look to their locks, and to keep a weather eye open for the intruders. * ♦ • The Hutt possesses a Civic League and a Progress League, in addition to the Boy Scouts and the Girl Guides. Those musically inclined can join the Choral Society and the Orchestra. We only want a branch of the Rotary Club to be complete. * * * Some person unknown has asked why the Hutt is like a balloon. He was probably thinking of the rates. At any rate, the Hutt is a good place to live and shop in. * * * It is stated on good authority that the Orchestra at the pictures has learned a new tune and will play it next Saturday night. * * ♦ A good joke was told at the flower show last week by the veteran exhibitor from Manaia. Some years ago in the days of a previous Governor, Mr. Gibson was exhibiting in Wellington. The Governess sent for him and asked to see his bulbs. He replied, "I do not exhibit bulbs, your Ladyship." "But," said the Governess, "you have been taking prizes for them, haven't you?" "No, your ladyship," he replied, "for blooms!"
