Hutt Valley Horticultural Society.
The Hutt Valley Horticultural Society held its 25th Annual Meeting on 4th July. There was a good attendance of members and friends. Mr. G. A. Chapman (the acting-presi-dent) presided, and congratulated the Society on the successful year's workings. The reports of the Treasurer and Secretary were read and adopted. The total membership on 31st May stood at 322. The Society has agreed to cooperate with the Borough Council's Scenic Reserves Committee in the formation of a rosary on the north side of the entrance to Massey Avenue. A sub-committee has laid down a design for the future development of the garden, which will be adopted as the finances permit. The meeting discussed at some length the renewal of the Cottage Garden Competitions, the opinion being expressed that if the gardens were only judged once in the season they would be more popular. It was decided to recommend the idea to the incoming Committee for further consideration, with special reference to the Mandel, or Invera Settlement. The finances of the Society were considered very satisfactory, showing a cash balance of £122/6/5, being an accumulation of £36 on the year's working. The following officers were elected for the coming year:—President, Sir Alexander Roberts; ladies' committee, Mesdames E. Yates, W. G. Alexander, W. Holgate, W. Mussen, W. E. Bock, C. Brady, L. T. Watkins, W. H. Smith, H. W. Kersley, W. Hendry, W. T. Strand, T. O. Bishop, D. J. Bews, Misses Finlay, Hobbs, Watkins, Stuart-Forbes, and Alexander; general committee, Messrs. T. H. Bilby, T. Instone, E. Parfitt, J. M. Kershaw, H. Edwards, W. E. Bock, F. J. Burrell, G. W. Gaudin, A. Grierson, R. N. Walls, W. H. Wilson, J. I. Alexander, W. Slater, W. J. Eddie, G: H. Savage, C. F. Pilcher, J. Dallenger, W. A. Roberts, C. E. Buckingham, A. J. Hobbs, W. G. Alexander, W. Copping, and A. Anderson; secretary, Mr. W. H. Smith; treasurer, Mr. H. J. Poole; auditor, Mr. W. B. Nicholson. A vote of thanks was passed to the chairman, who, for over 20 years, had worked both as a member and an official of the Society. Mr. Chapman is declining official position on account of ill-health. The meeting expressed its appreciation of Mr. Watkins' services while occupying the position of president.
