NEWS AND NOTES.
,Flower lovers would be rewarded by paying' a visit to Iliddiford Gardens this week to see . # a bed of Marguerite carnations in the most beautiful colours an-i. of most exquisite form. To i.cc this flower blooming freely in mid-winter is to make every gardener ambitious to have a similar bed of his own next year. The anemones, though not yet in full bjoom, are looking very healthy and will soon be a blaze of colour. * * * A correspondent writes us with regard to the formation of a Debating Society in the Hutt, and is good enough to olYev hia services, if required, to launch such a societyl. This gentleman" is a newcomer to the district, and has had considerable experience in the Old Country organising such societies for the "Youth Movement." There' certainly should be scope : for such a society, and if any would like to pursue the matter further ■ will' they JkincUy send their names to -the Editor, P.O. Box 19. • * * * The dances held by the Lower Hutt Association Football Club are always very popular functions, and the dance held by that Ciub on Saturday, May 28th, at the Lyceum Hill was no exception. It was a highly successful and very enjoyable dance, and towards the end of the evening when Mr. Hall;- the M.C., announced that the Club intended to hold another dance on Saturday, June 18th, the intimation was received with much enthusiasm by the large gathering. The Club is to be congratulated onhaving- a most energetic and willingSocial Committee, -comprising:— Messrs. J. Potts (chairman), T. Potts, Adam, B&tchelor. Bird, Cathro, Reynolds, Stevenson, sen., Stevenson, junr., McDo'ugall; Mesdames Batche[or. (Hon. secretary and treasurer), Adam,'' Potts, Bird arid Cathro; Misses Kay and Thomson. The ladies of the . Committee are to be complimented on the dainty supper provided for the dancers. * * * "Tui" writes regarding danger to pedestrian traffic at the west end of
the Hutt Bridge owing to the excessive speed of motor traffic, and suggests that another footway should be erected on the south side of the bridge. This question was gone into fully some three years ago before there was any talk of a new bridge, and was found impracticable. We no not think any good purpose would be served by again bringing the matter forward when the new bridge is so near an accomplished fact. The same writer asks, who receives the penalties collected from breaches of the borough by-laws? Prosecutions taken up by the police are generally tried under their Statutes, in which case the fine goes into the consolidated fund. On the other hand if the case is taken up by a borough inspector it is usually tried under the by-law, in which case the fine is the property of the Borough Council. ♦ * * The fortnightly meeting of the Rose of the Valley Lodge, Manchester Unity, 1.0.0. F., was held on Thursday last, N.G. Bro. Shadlock presiding over a large attendance. I.P.N.G. Bro. Hardy installed the following officers into their respective chairs:— U.G. Sister A. Reynolds, to the N.G. chair; Warden Sister Wickham, to the U.G. chair; Bro. McKenzie, as Tyler; Sister McKenzie and *Bro. Teasdale as Conductors. One candidate was proposed. On May 26th five new candidates were initiated into the Order. A benefit dance has been arranged to be held in the Lodge room on Monday, 20th June, on behalf of a brother who has been ill for a considerable time. It is hoped that a large number of members and friends will come along and give this dance their ardent support. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Bellevue Lodge, No. 126, 100 F.N.Z., was held in the Scouts' Hall on Monday, June 6th. Bro. Kay, N.G., presided over a good attendance. One candidate was initiated in due form. Bro. H. W. Jones presented the Social Committee with two prizes for competition. Considerable business was transacted, after which Lodge was closed, when swpper was partaken of.
