Church of England

» A meeting of parishioners was lielc in the schoolroom on Tuesday even - ing, 12th December to discuss t!i. question of church enlargement whicl ■ is very urgent. The meeting was small, but it wai composed of very earnest church wor ; kers. The vicar was in the chair. Aftoi . some remarks bearing on the import i ance of tho matter he asked Mr Hoi da way, the people's warden, to givt s an account of steps which liatl been taken, and to lay before the meeting propyls vgartlin"; t 1 "- " ' i and the result of his enquiries regard- ■ ing the probable cost. After tlicst had been talked over thoroughly it wa.s decided t'> at an re take steps h: have tho cbitrdi • lengthened is ix teem feet, by moving the eastern end of the church outwards and filling in the space thus made; and that the church should at the seme time be paintosT'aud necessary repairs effected in the belfry. Tlie question of money was thjen discussed, ar.d although no definite sum cDuld be stated it was hoped that some £80 or £f!0. in addition to the money already collected, would defray the cost. This, however, remains to be seen. ' The church treasurer said that he I most sincerely hoped that the parishioners would regard any contributions they might make'to the enlargement as extra to their usual subscriptions to the church revenue and expen.se, as there was great need that there should be no falling off in these matters. To show their earnestness in the matter, and the strong sense that the alterations should be effected as promptly as possible, those present at the meeting promised a total sum of £24 Bs. This from so small a number was a very satisfactory beginning, and if only the large number of parishioners who did not attend will contribute as liberally and promptly in proportion it may reasonably be hoped that the sum required for the alterations will be in hand by the time the . work is finished .
