Notice and fori:: of appeal by registered post.—'Disc:I pline." | The? above Ls the text of a telegram which Mr F. L. Pearce. of Makiuo, lias received from the Defence authorities. Its meaning is clear. Mr Pearce is a member of a very well-known family in the district. He has a brother chairman of the Oroua County Council, and another brother chairman, of the Kiwitea Ooumty Council. He is 47 years of age, twice married, and has two sone, the elder of whom has been in camp for somo months, and is shortly to sail for the front. These facte should have been sufficient to protect Mr Pearce from the risk of a ballot with the first division men. But there is another. He has only one arm. In filling up the National Register card, Mr Pearce gave„tliese particulars. Still he has been drawn in the finst ballot.
