Feilding Races

NOTES .FOlt THE OHROXIOLtE. ■ Feilding Jockey Club's spring meeting was begun yesterday and will be continued and concluded to-oiay. Wedesday's events were got off in perfect weather, but the course was of a ho.lding quality, and the times for the races were slow. The club was favoured with a la'i'ge and representative attendance, visitors haili.ng from Wellington, Otaki, Levin, and Shannon on the eouth, the Wairarapa on the west and from Palmerston North and other contiguous districts. 'Kinaldo won the principal race of the day—St. Andrew's Handicap. Square Deal was first to move and he led the field for the first mile and a quarter, his jockey steadying him for the greater part of the way. He was (still in the lead fifty yards from the winning post, but here Rinaldo came with a burst of speed and fairly beat Square Deal whose efforts for his head seemed to have taken all the I surplus "go" out of him. Third place was -filled by Lady Louisa, i whose effort in this race was far better than her showing in the seven furlong welter 'race at Aelihurt a week ago suggested. Evidently she was suited by the heavier going yesterday. Adjutant, Master Moutoa, and Ma,niaroa, three candidates whose chances were favourably thought of in some quarters, failed to run prominently. The JTeiilding Stakes fell to iMr G. L. Stead's Itoesian, who hopped smartly out of the barrier ,and landed his Bst 21b ahead of the fast-finishing Bimeter, whose feat of running second wl.th 9st 111b in the saddle, on a heavy course, wa.s a highly meritorious performance. Undoubtedly Bimeter is at the top of his form this season. Cease Fire, a chestnut fillv from the Highden stable, ran into third place, but the favourite Crowhurst was well beaten. Detroit, a Levin-owned horse, who

was making his first essay in open company, beat a field of eleven .runners ■'n the Kiwitea Welter. Orleans, Montana, Crawford and Ma rsinah all finished behind him, Montana (second) being the only one of the quartette to gain a place. The Baronet won the Trial Plate, defeating Acre (a hot favourite who ran second) and eighteen other runners. Lady Black won the Flying Stakes, Hushmnn (as fat as an akfierman) 'running into second place just ahead of the fast-iinishing Astor, who carried top-waight. Interlude, well-backed, iva.s well back also. The public's placing of the three horses in the Spring Hurdles was Marton 1, Sir Donald 2, Glenorchy 3. This was shown by the fotaliisator. They actually finished in inverse orJer, Glenorchy landing home an easy ivinner from Sir DonaW, whose jumping was faulty. Marton jumped well but lacked staying power. >a i mid, Austin, who ran first, second . ind th'.rd at Ashurst last week, flushed exactly the same yesterday; a striking reproduction of week-old form in a big field. Janitor ran fourth and Portland Lady fifth. The last race of the day—the tfitzroy Hack Handicap—was won oy Analogue, with the little-fancied Munition in second place. Antwerp, well backed, got third place only, though he finished fast. He may do better in to-day's drier going. I A Hackneyi Borough Council "scavenger," named Charles Mott,. when leaving his home on a recent Monday morning forgi.t his pipe. Because he returned for it he remarked to hie w'.ife: "1 know it is bad luck," and went out again to his dmties. Two hours later he was brought home again in a bath-chair by two Territorials, having had an epileptic seizure. He died, in the Haclsney Infirmary on the Tuesday. (
