Sailly Saillisel is the key to the position on the crest of the ridge dominating St. Pierre Vaast. The heaviest fighting for the village has been continuous since Sunday evening. Sailly Saillisel is the ]ast natural stronghold on the edge of the plan stretching north-east to Cambrai. Everything posible was done to elaborate the defence of the village by the Germans, and they crowded in as much garrison as the trenches, ruined buildings, and cellars would hold.
