It asked that the local county council endorse this resolution. The Rotorua Chamber of Commerce is unanimously desirous of utilising prison labour for tho maintenance of the main arterial roadis and recently passed a resolution urging on the Government that it should do this. The reasons advanced for this request are: The deplorable state of the roads; lack of funds with local bodies; the Government announcement that road giants must be curtailed; that such a step was proved suecessj ftil in 'other countries where ni has ' been followed, and because of the dearth of free labour. ~ The northern body set out the abore in a communication to the Ilorowhenua County and askedi if the latter approved of it to enlist the active support of the district Parliamentary representative, for it. J. Faith, of Te Horo, wrote asking the council if they would exchange half an acre of their metal reserve on tho north end of the Gear estate for a similar area on the south end. According to i'. I'ogden a resident along the Cenetary read, Otaki the road " is not fit to walk on" and only the possession of a light cart and strong horse enables him to take his take his milk out, and he asked the counciL to remedy the state of affairs. Application was made by Toa Ransfield, of Manakau. to shift hie fence out to the edge of the road so as to prevent stock from getting round and 110111 breaking away the bank. G. Spurring, secretary to the Paliiko Drains Committee, requested that the council notify those responsible tor the clearing of the said drains. The Levn Co-operative Dairy Company proposes to erect a casein plant at thur lhakara creamery, but the section they are at present occupying is not sufficiently large to provide the necessary accommodation. They therefore asked permisison to occupy a small portion of the unused road adjoining the creamery section about five to thirty feet from the road line. A long circular from Dr S. Smith set. forth the great danger in not doing everything to suppress the fly pest, and urged that all householders keep a watchful eye on all rubbish and garbage and prevent its accumulation and the access of flies thereto, also to keep all premises, yards and outbuildings clear, and to trap and poison flies within and without the house.
