Horowhenua Races
♦ — A SUCCESSFUL DAY. Yesterday on the Levin racecourse the Horowhenua Racing Club held its second annual meeting. The early morning was fine, changing later on to close humid conditions with light rain setting in shortly after eleven o'clock. It soon became a heavy shower, but clearedi up for a while and then 6efc in again about half-past two. These showers epoint to an extent he pleasure of the day, hut did not affect the racing, which was good, there being some close finishes. The starting was particularly good, and witk the exception of the first race the horses were got away at the first 123465 23456 got away well together. The attendance was satisfactory 'and* the totalisator well patronised, the amount of money put through showing 1 an increase of no less than £2645 on the total of last year; tse figures for the dfcys be-

Carmont). f There was one false start, but at the second attompt the horses got away well together, and Kurapai led with the Golfer close up. Coming round ! the first time Kurapai was in front, followed by The Golfer, Ormesby and ( Keynote in that order. 'Round the west end The Golfer went well .to the front, and maintained liis lead till coming into the straight, when Waima- , liaki came with a great- run and defeated The Golfer "by half a length, with the third horse three lengths away. Soon 'after the start Pall Mall went to the front. This position was taken by Sir Wallace at the home turn and the rest of field were bunched. Half way down the straight Rongora forged ahead, and won by the three-quarters of a length. From an even start Tyson led the way round the back followed by Sweet Tipperary, and this order was rjaintained into the straight, where Husliabye took the leadi and held it to the ; post, winning easily by three lengths, with Tyson close up third. Price) 4 l Ladify (Lawry). ; This was a splendid race. From a 3 good start the horses got away well f together and, Ladify secured a slight - lead, followed closely by Orleans. This . was the position till coming near the - home bend where Master Moutoa started to move up and Ladify went back. Half way clown the straight the winner t got up well t,nd a f~ £ue3~ between Orleans and Master 1 EMoutoa, the. latter getting the verdict 5 by a neck. Want was two lengths - away. Half way round the latter closed up a a little, but Bairnsdale could not be j caught, and won easily by a length s and a half, with 'about half a length ' between second and third. This ivas the position to the end of the race; Bronk Delaval's challenge coming down the straight was stayed off. Won easily by three quarters of a length. Time lmin. 59-45 sec. The rider of Silenus entred 'a> complaint that lie was interferd with by Sir Fisher, but it was not upheld 1 . 7.—MAIDEN SCURRY.—Of 45sovs., second horse to receive lOsovs.,. and third horse asovs. from the stake. Bell), 11 Delecto (R. Manson). Harem Skirt and Sweet Amy were first out of the barrier, but were caught by Hupanw at the end of two furlongs, andi he easily maintained this lead to the finish. Heni came very fast at the finish, hut failed to catch the leaders —Hupani and Black Night. B.—WBRAROA WELTER (Open).—X>f 7osovs., second horse to receive lOsovs., and third horse Ssovs. from the stake. Seven furlongs. 3 Mr R. M. Carter's Worcester (Soult—Merry Maid) (O'Shea) 1 1 Mr S. W. Tatham's Jean Ivaddo (A. Olliver) 2 7 Mr F. Higgott's Martial Air (C. Monk) 3 AJso started.—6 His Eminence (W. Bowden) 5 Ladify (W. Price) 2 Mahzoltov (A. Reed;), 4 Pnrewanui (C. Price). This was a big betting race, and Jean Laddo was finally installed favourite, with Maibzoltov next in demand. The latter led at the start, but after going a short distance Worcester took the I lead, and then the result was never iin doubt. The favourite, got 'away badly and' failed to catch Worcester, though she beat Martial Air by two lengths. Time lmin 31 2-ssecs.
