Turkey's Future
4 (London Times). A series of articles has appeared in the Frankfurter Zeitung on the subject of future trade relations between Germany audi the Ottoman Empire. It starts with the characeristic assurances that the intention is to stand by Turkey's side as if she were one of the I'atherland. Its tone recalls the propaganda issued at the time of the formation of the Germano-Turkish Association, the avowed object of whic'h was to support Turkey in the full development of her industrial resources, instead of following England's policy and "throttling her economic freedom by reckless exploitation, such as brought her cotton industry from prosperity to ruin." Believers in the idea of a selfcontained union of Central Europe see in the Near Ivi.sr a useful source of agricultural and mineral wealth, e.g. woo I. cotton, oils, silk, egg«. vegetables, dried Iruits. leather, tobacco, chrome, copper, emery, borax*. Turkey, however, is given to understand, that her own textile industry will be encouraged by leaving her sufficient raw cotton for its requirement^. German manufacturers are warned against expecting any great e.\-teii.« : on of Rales. During the war the Turk has made considerable progress in war manulaettires, including clothing and provisions, which ho will conserplently be able to supply later for civil requirements. Leather goods, cement and bricks, too. are goods which can be produced in increasing quantities locally.
