Sir Douglas Haig reports:—
Several heavy conluer-a*tacks south of Ancre were all repulsed. The enemy, idvancing from Los Bceufs, north of Flers, were caught in our artillery barr.'ge and lost heavily. An enemy brigade advancing between Flers and Martinpuich to attack in the direction of High Wood, was met by two of our battalions in the open. Hand-to-hand fighting ensued, wherein we were completely successful, the enemy being dispersed' with heavy losses. We improved our position north of Mouquet .Farm. Our artillery is active and caused another conflagration i,n the enemy's ammunition camp a,t Grandecourt Our aviators eontinuesd successfully their attack on the enemy's communications. Paris September 18. A communique states: — North of the Homme our artillery actively bombarded enemy works. South of the Sum me we gainedi important successes. The villages of VermandoviMers and Berny, hitherto partly occupied by us, were conquered by a brilliant assault. Some houses still are resisting. All the ground between Vermandovillers and Deniecourt, and between I>eniccourt and Berny, was defendied by several systems of strongly fortified trenches, which fell into our hands after a desperate struggle. The fighting continues around Deniecourt. We captured a number of trenchcs between Berny rind Barleaux. All enemy 1 counter-attacks were sliatI tered bv our fire, with heavy loss. | Seven hundred: unwounded prisoners ' were counted. A USTRIAN COMMUNQUE. Amsterdam, Sept. 18. An Austrian communique states The Russians made extraordinary and unsuccessful efforts to shake the allied line. Superior forces attacked ua west of Dornawatra between Caipul and Yzernahora, south-west of Brzezany. They were repulsed. Numerous waves of troops attempted a master stroke at Luzk. The attacks mostly broke down. Where successful our counter-attacks threw them out.
The Italians continue attacks clay and nigbt. Our front is unshaken.
The enemy south-east of Dolierdolake continually brought up fresh troops and penetrated our lines. Fighting at close quarters turned in our favour. RUMANIA'S CAMPAIGN. (Times Service). London, Sept. 1". The Times's correspondent at Rumanian headquarters says:— "The Russo-Rumamians are failing back in the Dobrudja, taking tip strong positions at Rcsova, ten miles south of Sehernnvoda, where there is a bridge; acros stho Danube, and at Tuzln, twelve miles south of Oonstantza."
A Rumanian official message states: We continued to advance on the north and jnortli-wcstern fronts. Three towns were occupied. Bransliill is in •our possession after frequently changing hands.
