.She was lying hidden in one of the rixer mouihs lii'ar Dar-es-iSalaam in undisturbed peace, when 011 the morning of April 22 -there appeared two British cruisers which opened a heavy fire 011 her. The captain decided to make a bolt for it. He waited until dusk, his vessel being damaged in the meanwhile though not renedered unseawor-t-liy. .Seizing a good opportunity lie steamed out with all lights extinguished. and before many hours bail lalmost entirely evaded his attackers.
The next day his pursuers again uppeaied and opened fire, but the .Marie managed to reach I'riok. She w!as a sorrv sight. Her masts and funnels had been entirely shot away and the hull looked like 'a perforated sheet. The davits bad been almost reduced to fragments. The engine-room, however, escaped, with the exception of one shot which went right through the ship.
