NEWS ITJSAIij FROM THE MAIL. Mr and Mrs \V. Tompsitt, old and respccted residents of Otaki, who were married at St. Mary's Cathedral, Wellington, by tho l!ev. Father McNamara V.G., 4;d 1891, celebrated their silver wedding; on Friday last. We congratulate them and wish them long life and. prosperity.
Residents of Ota Iki and district responded well to the appeal for donations for tho relief of dependents of the sailors who .lost their lives in the recent naval battle, and as a result of "Sailors' Day"—the special effort held on Saturday last—a splendid sum a«,s been (raised to help this worthy object. Though there was little notice given the local Patriotic Society advertised the effort well, and the generous response was "most gratifying. In a.l' a sum of £120 14s 2d was raised.
A football match was played at Otaki on Saturday when the loea! 'team defeated Waitcbu, who were not liilly represented, by 14 point* to 9. "W the winners Brwden scored 1 two t:ies. Jacob and Hakaraia one each, one try being converged by \Veti. . For Waitohu, Glentworth, Mjarsh irul Lodge swred. The game was an even one, finfc tlie passing of the Otaki backs was the means of defeating Waitohu. It was clean and crisp, and a credit to all who took part. Mr "Rema na was refert®.
A deal of interest is now bwrnr token in the hockey championship fixtures and it gratifying to see many outsiders taking a lively interest. On. Wednesday next thero should bo another large crowd, two important fixtures Being set down to be decided at Otaki. Tainui it is undersood will muster t'lioir forces, nnd with Bowdcn. Patc'liing, Bevan, llelma, \Von<i and others, ishonld put up a good ftp-Vit with Otaki. The Co>llogo-Te Horo match shoti'd be a particularly *ood one, end great interest is already being ma.nifest(«l. On the last occasion Te Horo proved victorious, but College claimed to have t.ie best of tTie game, and on this occasion consider they tan win, while Te Horo are equally sanguine of victory. It i« hoped that tho day will be fine, so that t"hc games may bo won on flieir merits.
