MANGAHAO RIVER
CAN IT SUPPLY POWER FOR WELLINGTON. The Hon. W. Fraser (Minister for Puiblc Works) replying to a question by Mr .H. Field (OfcaKi) -stated that the survey of the Mangahao river for water-powea - development purposes had. been completed, and plans of the taino are now being prepared, hut no final report has yet been madT\ Yhe investigation so far indicate that 'his eclicme possesses .a greater vakie tliau was originally estimated,, and it will be considered as a possible ischeme for the general supply 'of 'Wellington and the southern part of tlio North Island, not mereVy as for one country in the vicinity of the. Mjaawaitu line. Mr W. 11. Fiold hoped that . lie scheme would bo proceeded with when the war was over. Mr T. M. Wilford (Lower Hutt): ■'Do you think the Manga lino river is as frond as tho Akatarawa river?" Mr Field said that that was for the engineers to say. The river ran at a high level above the two valleys into which tunned oould bo made; and would therefore develop, ho thought, a great amount of power.
