The necessity for a crane at the Otaki Railway Station is very marked, md it is hoped tho Department wiU be up and doing." The matter is one that has long interested! Mr Field, M.L\, and otliors. A day or two ago there were some twenty two!vo-himdred-weight pipes, which had to be bodily liftedi oyer the sides of the trucks by manual efforts. When trucked at Maste'rton a crane was used, but as there is no crane a/t Otaki, much trouble was experienced. A very naety accident, of a somewhat extraordinary nature, occured at North Manakau on Mondlay last, Mrs Bates, wife of one of the men. engaged on the bushfeJling contracts, was stooping down, gathering tho wood as her husband chopped it. Mr Bates's axe struck a very hiardi piece of wood, and the axe. glancing off, struck Mrs Bates across the neck, inflicting a very

urly gash, though not serious. The sufferer was at once motored to the Otaki Hospital.

A man named Grimstone, while cutting Bax a few days ago, had"the misfortune to cut his leg with n hook. The wound is a very nasty one. but the sufferer, who was removed to the Otaki Hospital, is doing well now. It is probable that the work of forming and metalling Anzac l!oad, which leadi- to the Otaki cemetery will be proceeded with by the contrlact-or, Mr G K. Douglas, at as early a date as possible. The large pipes hareaarri s edi, and will be placed in position at* the creck as expeditiously as possible. When the matter of painting the Druids' hall was under discussion *, last night's mooting of the lodge, one member moved that it bo dieferred till the British enter Berlin. Lapsed <or want of a seconder. The Hutt County Council, at \ts meeting yesterday, agreed to ,give >'ts two assistant clerks a war bonus of 5s per week.
