Otaki and District

4 -NKWti PARS i'T'OAi THE M A 11',. A party of seven young men—members of the band of clerical students who Ijiave been holiday-making at Otaki lor some time past leave to-day for a walking tow over the Tararua ranges from Otaki to Grey-town. As thg weather seems to ue set lair, tiie party should have a very pleasant trip. Friday night's gale*did considerable damage, in various parte of tihe town and district. Several crops were almost razed to the ground* while portions oi stacks were earned bodily away. Fruit trees, flower gardens, etc., ivere also damaged. A splendid rain, which fell duaing the night, was mast beneficial to the pastures.

At Friday night's meeting of the Otaki Patriotic- Society, the Rev H. I'-ottom moved that tilft' proposal to rattle certain sections ot land, dionated the Society by ail Otn.ki desident, bo referred back to the Committee, suggesting that some other means oi disposing of tihe gifts be adopted. Mr Cottom said he and others wero opposed to gambling in any shape and form, andi thought it a pity that tho Society shouldi engage in anything in which the whole of its members could not conscientiously and heartily join. After some little discussion, the matter lapsed, the motion not being seconded. It was pointed out that the matter had been before the full commit tee—complete arrangements had been made for tiie art union, tickets being distributed:, etc. Several speakers agreed that it would be unwise to allow children to sell tickets, and a motion was carried unanimously to the effect that no one under FTie age of 21 years be allowed lo dispose bi art union tickets. At the last meeting of the Otaki Patriotic Society, a lengtTilv discussion ensued on a proposal to send monthly supplies of comforts to soldier boys at the front—a suggestion bv Mrs McHardy, who generously offered to donote SO endi month for the purpose. 12ventually Mr C. E. I)ann was appointed- as receiving agent, to accept gifts of comforts for soldiers, and pack and forward same, the "Society to defray cost of packing, etc. Mr Dann will co-operate with those engaged in Wellington in this good work. Particulars as to receipt of gifts, etc., will be publicly notified in these columns later on.
